THAT WAS DIFFERENT

I knew Christmas was going to be different this year because of the pandemic. I didn’t realize until later just how much I missed getting together at Christmas with all of my family. We decided as a family that it would be best not to all get together and follow the Minnesota Department of Health recommendations concerning the spread of COVID. I know this is a hot topic and people have their own opinions about this, but that was our decision.

After all, it is just for one Christmas, we did the same at Thanksgiving. Everyone stayed home at Thanksgiving and that went okay. Staying home at Christmas was the right decision for us, but it was different than Thanksgiving. Christmas is about family, all the memories of past Christmases and wanting to make more family memories didn’t happen this year.

Adelyn reading The Christmas Story from the Bible

We did get invited by our son Brandon to come have Christmas Eve dinner with his family so Roxie and I did drive over to Montevideo Christmas Eve. There were seven of us in the house and we had a really nice dinner that Brandon and Katie made and we watched our three grandchildren open presents. It was so much fun watching them tear into their presents with the excitement they showed and all the smiles. Adelyn read the Christmas Story from the Bible and Gretta read “The Night Before Christmas“. So Eli, who is 4 wanted to read to us also. He read “Slippery Fish“, which had nothing to do with Christmas but he made us all laugh.

We did Zoom with our other children and grandkids Christmas Eve, but it wasn’t the same as being together. Normally when we’re all together we play games and just sit around talking and laughing. Everyone brings food and snacks over so there’s always plenty of great food. I really did miss getting together with everyone this year. We even missed our Christmas Eve Candlelight Service at church. If I recall, that might have been the first time we’ve ever missed that service, so 2020 can end anytime.

Christmas Day it was just Roxie and I and we did absolutely nothing but eat and watch movies and the Vikings. However, Christmas night I stayed up until 3am watching The Crown on Netflix. I am so addicted to that show. I was wide awake and could have stayed up all night. I slept until 10am the next morning. I hadn’t done that in a long time. The following day, Roxie said she had a project for us and that was shampooing the carpets in the house. Which we did. So my few days of Christmas vacation this year was certainly different from years past. 2020 is just about done and hopefully next Christmas we can all gather together and celebrate Christmas the right way.
