INTERVIEWING AMAZING PEOPLE

I’ve had the opportunity to interview some truly amazing people lately. Last week, I wrote about why I love my job so much, and this is one of the main reasons: the chance to sit down and talk with people.

Now, I’m the first to admit I’m not the world’s best interviewer, but I’d like to think I’ve improved at asking the right questions over the years. I’m also not always the best listener—just ask my wife or my coworkers! However, what I have learned is that the key to a great interview is doing your homework. Research is everything. These days, with tools like ChatGPT, it’s easier than ever to find information and prepare.

Lately, I sat down with four wonderful individuals. I really did my homework for these, doing extensive research and writing out targeted questions. I’d encourage you to listen to each interview and let me know what you think.

Dave Mciver

Dave McIver: Author, Speaker, and CEO

Dave McIver is the CEO of PraiseFM, and I actually used to work at that station (then KCGN) on the weekends right as Dave was starting his career there. I recently read his book, Looking for the One, and if you are a follower of Jesus, it is a must-read. In fact, my Bible study group is currently reading it and discussing a new chapter each week.

Save the date: Dave will be speaking at Dawson Covenant Church on Sunday, April 26th at 6:30 PM.

Avery Koenen NDSU

Avery Koenen: A Star on and off the Court

Avery, a Montevideo graduate, has become one of the best women’s basketball players in the country. She and her team at North Dakota State University had a historic season, winning the Summit League. Avery swept the awards this year, earning Summit League Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. I really enjoyed our visit; she spoke beautifully about her faith and how following Jesus guides her life.

Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson: From Dawson to Vietnam

I’ll admit I don’t know a whole lot about farming, but it’s always a pleasure to visit with Dustin Johnson. Dustin recently traveled to Vietnam in March as part of the MARL (Minnesota Agriculture and Rural Leadership) Program. He shared fascinating insights into the MARL program and how farmers in Vietnam manage their crops. It was a truly eye-opening conversation.

Aidyn Bruns Meteorologist

Aidyn Bruns: Chasing Storms and Dreams

In honor of Severe Weather Awareness Week, I spoke with Aidyn Bruns. She is a Canby High School graduate now studying meteorology at the University of Oklahoma. Aidyn clearly knows her stuff and is incredibly passionate about her path. She’s navigating a heavy load of math and science classes and is a natural in front of the camera. She’s going to make a fantastic television meteorologist.

As you can see, I have a pretty great job. I’m constantly learning new things and meeting people who inspire me. Take a listen to the interviews—how do you think I did with my questions?
