AM I NORMAL?

I’m still on the mend from open-heart surgery, which means my daily routine is strictly governed by three things: watching TV, taking mandatory walks to convince my doctors I’m trying, and scheming with Roxie over whatever heart-healthy meal is on today’s menu. That’s pretty much my whole life right now.

So, this past Saturday, I did my early morning walk, came inside, sat in my favorite recliner, and proceeded to watch college football uninterrupted for twelve straight hours. From 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Was Saturday the greatest day ever in college football? So many top 20 teams playing each other, fantastic finishes and just so much fun to watch. It was all day of watching football, I did nothing else!

Please tell me I’m not the only one who does this, or I might actually have to admit I have a problem. Is this normal behavior?

I’ll admit, a small voice in the back of my head kept whispering that I should probably be accomplishing something around the house. But then I looked at the remote control, looked at my chair, and decided I’m watching college football! Besides, my thumb got plenty of exercise switching channels.

Here’s how my marathon went down:

  • 10:00 AM: Started off flipping frantically between College GameDay on ESPN and Big Noon Kickoff on FOX.
  • 11:00 AM: Kickoff! Indiana and Ohio State went down to the absolute wire. What a game. Hoosier should have stayed inbounds on the last play.
  • Afternoon: Moved on to North Dakota upsetting the #1 ranked South Dakota State Jackrabbits. I have a lot of Jackrabbit friends and I felt bad for them
  • The Highlight: Auburn knocking off #1 Georgia 27-24! My brother-in-law James is a massive Auburn fan, so my phone was blowing up with texts back and forth with him.
  • More Chaos: Watched Tennessee pull off the upset against Alabama, because why not add more drama to the day? It was fun because I hate Alabama!
  • Evening: Kept the marathon rolling with North Dakota State taking down Nevada in the Fargodome. I nearly jumped out of my chair when Nevada missed a field goal right as the first half ended, only for the Bison to field it in the end zone and return it 105 yards for a touchdown!

(Side confession: Whenever I watch the Jackrabbits or the Bison, I mute the TV and turn on their local radio play-by-play callers. As a radio guy myself, I just can’t help it—those guys do a fantastic job!)

  • Nightcap: Miami and Florida State in overtime was crazy! Ended the night watching BYU upset Notre Dame before finally calling it quits.

By the end of the night, my total achievements for the day were:

  1. Writing this blog post.
  2. Eating all my mandated heart-healthy meals.
  3. Giving my remote a workout!

On the bright side, the Gophers had a bye week, so at least I was spared the usual blood-pressure spike that comes with watching them play!

I’m doing it all over again with the NFL on Sunday. Right after church, of course. The Vikings have a bye as well, so my new heart will get a break and not get stressed.
