FUN THINGS HAPPEN TO ME AT FAIRS

The Lac qui Parle County Fair never disappoints! I always enjoy attending, and the fair board does a fantastic job putting on a great event. This year was especially memorable, and I wanted to share some of the highlights.

I kicked off Thursday with my live broadcast of the Garden Show, joined by Duane Hastad from Heather Nursery and Floral. We had a great time sitting among beautiful plants, talking with listeners about their lawn and garden questions.

Thursday afternoon is one of my favorite times at the fair. I love attending the announcement of the county’s  Century Farms. This year, we honored four families whose farms have been in their family for 100 years. It’s always a privilege to interview them, and I’m consistently amazed by the details they share about their ancestors. They tell stories about how each generation worked the land, the challenges they faced, and the deep pride they feel. It’s truly moving to see their passion and, often, tears of joy as they talk about their family’s legacy.

On Friday, I broadcasted a football game, so I didn’t make it to the fairgrounds until around 9 p.m. I watched the Chris Hawkey Band perform in the freezing cold and felt for them—it was a really chilly night!

Saturday brought much nicer weather and a huge crowd. I’m pretty sure it was a record-breaking attendance day! The lines were long, and it was tough to get around, but it was great to see so many people enjoying the fair. My grandkids were there and had a blast on the rides.

Fair food was a bit different for me this year due to my health. It was hard to resist all the greasy food, but I found a few things I could enjoy.

Working at the Q-92 booth is always a highlight. I get to chat with our listeners and hear amazing stories about why they love KLQP. One older couple told me they live in the Twin Cities and listen all day long. Hearing things like that really makes my day.

The fair concluded on Sunday with a beautiful worship service. I appreciate when our community can come together to worship, putting aside our different denominations. Dave Mikiver from Praise FM gave a wonderful message.

County fair season is over for now, but I’m already looking forward to next summer!
