I am always surprised when I post something on my social media sites and it gets a huge response from my friends and family. When I think it’s just a random stupid post but yet my followers respond to it like they are entering a contest to win millions!
One such post was last weekend. I was in the Brainerd lakes area last Sunday with family. I departed the Little Falls Country Club around 3pm and headed for home. I noticed my gas gauge had a little over a quarter tank left. I thought to myself when I get to St Cloud I will fill up with gas. Well St Cloud came and I thought I could make it to Willmar and fill up with gas there. When I was in Willmar my gas gauge was dead on empty. This is when it gets fun.

I checked my “miles left” gauge, and it said that I had 110 miles left before I ran out of gas. My physical gauge read empty, the needle was right on the E. So I thought to myself, it’s only 60 miles from Willmar to Madison and that gives me enough gas to make it to Madison. My wife wasn’t with me and I was alone, so I thought I am going to test this out! If my wife would have been with me, we would have put gas on in Little Falls!
I thought to myself what would be the worst thing that could happen? I would run out of gas on highway 40. Then what would I do? I would call my wife to put the lawn mower gas can in her car and come get me! She wouldn’t be happy about that I know. I wouldn’t be able to live that down for the rest of my life as to how dumb I was. So, I thought I would gamble and test the gas gauge out anyways! I left Willmar with the needle just on the other side of the E.

I kept checking the miles left gauge while driving home on highway 40! When I got to Milan, I was really happy, now if I ran out of gas, she wouldn’t be so mad at me because it’s only 20 miles to Milan if she had to come get me. Coming out of Milan my “low fuel light” started flashing! I got nervous, but my gauge said I still had 60 some miles left to go before I ran out of gas! I passed LQPV high school and smiled because I knew I was going to make it home! I pulled into the garage with mileage to spare! I did it!! I snapped a picture of my dashboard. The miles left gauge works!
Then I posted it on Facebook and people responded in big numbers! I couldn’t believe all my friends and family that said they do the same thing! I was really shocked. Nobody evers talks about this. Then some of my mechanic friends scolded me for running my tank just about empty telling me that it will ruin the fuel pump. I didn’t know that. I had a few friends that thought I was stupid and dumb.
Here are some responses. I do that all the time. Living on the Edge! No problem if you like to walk. I’m a risk taker too Paul. That’s a bold move.
Some of my favorite posts. “I was stressed out just reading this! Please don’t try this again!” My niece said “this stresses me out”! Another good one was “When it says zero miles left you really have one gallon left”. Another is “I do it all the time, even when it says 0 miles left”
It was an amazing post and thanks for all who commented. You never know when you post something what the response will be.
