The end of Johns Journal is upon us. John Millea from the Minnesota State High School League is retiring after 15 years of writing stories about high school athletes. I think I have read all off them from the beginning.
I have blogged about John a number of times. I had the chance to interview John about his career this week and he was kind enough to give me just about an hour of his time. During the interview something struck me. John and I have a lot in common. The more he talked about how much he loves his job and family the more I realized I have those same thoughts and feelings about my job and family.

For instance, he can’t believe he gets to do what he does. I have said the same thing about my job at the radio station many times. I remember the very first paycheck I got from KLQP, it was in 1992 and I had broadcasted my very first basketball game. It didn’t even feel like I had been working and I got a paid! I remember just standing and staring at that check for the longest time and thinking Maynard is paying me money to have fun!! I couldn’t believe it and I still feel that way 33 years later.

John says in our interview “How lucky am I to get to do what I do” I say the same thing. How lucky am I? John says he cherishes all the relationships he has with coaches, players, referees, concession workers, parents, grandparents and janitors, and the list goes on. I can again say the same thing. I love the people I’ve built relationships with over the years. When former high school athletes invite me to their weddings, that means the world to me. Because of our jobs, we have gotten to know many people and that is a real blessing.

One more thing, when John was describing his wife Beth to me and talking about their relationship, it was as if he was describing Roxie and I. It was amazing listening to him talking about how they met and how opposite they are. He said she doesn’t care for sports, but she does watch the Vikings, but that is about it. That’s my Roxie. They enjoy going out to eat, walking together and catching a movie once in a while. That’s us! John continued that they don’t do the bar scene or have a lake cabin to go to. That’s us! They like to stay home. That’s us! It was fun listening to him describe their relationship.

I have known John for 15 years. John has touched many lives, including mine and he will be missed for sure. The best advice he gave me concerning covering high school sports. Is this. “Always look for the story! Every school, every team, every athlete or coach has a story to tell”.
So when I walk into a gym or on a football field I always look for the story I can share on the radio when broadcasting games or on my blog. Thanks, John, for a job very well done. Enjoy retirement my friend.
