VACATIONING WITH KIDS

Roxie and I got away for a few days to enjoy the North Shore. We have been there before, but it’s one of our favorite places to visit. We love Duluth and the North Shore.

Vacations are sure different when it is just you and your spouse. Roxie and I talked about all the vacations we took when our children were little. With kids, its more work going on a vacation. Packing the suitcases, packing the van, following the map, camping, buying food, motels, driving and planning ahead. How did we do that? We sure had a lot of energy then. We did create some great memories with our children. We camped in Yellowstone and Montana on one vacation. We went to the Black Hills a few times. We vacationed in Colorado, and early on we went to Memphis and saw Graceland when it was 110 degrees.

Family vacation in the 80’s. Black Hills with Barney Rubble.

We did a lot of tent camping with our children and the kids really enjoyed setting up there own tent. We had some very nice campsites. I actually enjoyed tent camping. But looking back on that experience I’m thinking, I don’t think I ever could do that now at my age. The work involved in tent camping and setting up a campsite back in the 80’s was hard work. We camped in the Wisconsin Dells once at a great campground with many activities for the kids and families. I remember campfires at night and roasting marshmallows, watching a great water ski show and playing miniature golf with the kids was fun. Even when the kids were teenagers we had fun family vacations.

LAKE SUPERIOR WITH OUR KIDS BACK IN THE DAY.

Now the work is gone, Roxie and I get in the car and pack a small bag and off we go! All the reservations are made online and I have GPS to guide me to where I need to go. It’s quiet in the car and I can listen to my own music and we do what we want to do and when we want to do it. This past week in Duluth, Roxie and I sat for hours on the shores of Lake Superior just enjoying the scenery and listening to the waves. Vacationing with your spouse can be a lot more relaxing than when you have children that is for sure.
