CRAZY FUN WEEK

I spent most of my week in Marshall covering section high school sports at Southwest Minnesota State University.

The last week of October and first week of November is full of playoff high school sports. I drove to SMSU this week, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. This never gets old for me. I love it. SMSU has outstanding facilities to host the volleyball and football section games. At the RA Facility I get to broadcast the volleyball matches sitting courtside. Usually sitting just feet from the coaches and teams. I enjoy visiting with Josh and Aaron from Marshall radio who usually sit next to me. there are also newspaper sports writers from the area and fans stop by to visit with me. It’s just a great atmosphere.

Morgan and Abby Hennen helped me broadcast the Minneota volleyball matches on Thursday and Saturday. They are former Vikings and when they were very young they approached me at the RA Facility after a match and begged me to put them on radio. I remember that well. Now after high school graduation they both put the headset on and enjoyed doing commentary for us at Q-92. They are both very good commentators. I’m looking forward to working with Abby at the state volleyball tournament this week.

Saturday was a busy day covering the state cross country meet at St. Olaf College from Northfield and the Section 3A volleyball championship from Marshall. The Canby -Minneota girls team and Zach Ourada qualified to run in Northfield Saturday. I wasn’t able to cover the meet, so I asked Tony Ourada to call in some reports and do some interviews for us. He did an awesome job. The girls placed 6th with Braelyn Merrit making all-state placing 20th and Zach also made all-state placing 24th. So a good day for the Canby -Minneota cross country team.

Friday afternoon I was at Mattke Field, the Minneota football team played Lakeview for the right to go to state. Minneota won and will play in Alexandria Friday vs Breckenridge in the quarterfinals. The press box at Mattke Field is really nice but the major problem is it’s not on the 50 yard line. It’s located on the south end of the field. It’s difficult to see when the action is on the north end of the field. I had a chance to interview Coach Johnston after the game. Chad is one of the best football coaches in the state.

So this week, I’ll be in the cities Thursday Friday and Saturday for state volleyball and I’ll be in Alexandria Friday night for Minneota football. It’s going to be a fun and busy week.
