If you love watching high school sports like I do, this past week was one to remember. From Canby Lancer football and volleyball teams playing in championship games, to state cross country in Northfield and Minneota volleyball heading back to state! What a fun week of high school sports.
Tuesday I witnessed one of the most exciting volleyball matches when Canby was down two sets to none and fought back and won the next three sets to beat Lakeview 3-2! I named Kyla Rangaard one of the Neon Needles Subway player of the game because of her one play that saved the season for the Lancers! I don’t think I’ve ever named someone player of the game because of one play. Lakeview had match point in set five, which means if they win the point they win the match and Canby’s season is done. Lakeview’s big hitter Stensrud hit the ball in the back row, which looked like it was going to be the winner. Kyla came out of nowhere leaving her feet and making an incredible dig to keep the ball off the floor! Canby then went on to take the match! Incredible play by Kyla and comeback for the lady Lancers.

Friday afternoon the Canby Lancer football team played the BOLD Warriors for the Section 5A championship in Marshall. Broadcasting from Mattke Field’s press box is pretty sweet. It’s a very nice press box and they even have a hook up for crowd noise for broadcasting. The only problem is the press box is located on the 10 yard line and it’s difficult to broadcast when the action is on the other 10 yard line and so far away from you. What a football season for the Lancers, they beat rival Dawson-Boyd and took down Minneota twice during the season. They lost to BOLD 21-0, BOLD had been averaging 48 points a game! Canby’s defense has been rock solid all season. What a fun year to be a Lancer football fan.
Saturday was a full day for me, traveling to Northfield to cover the state cross country meet. It’s one of my favorite high school sporting events to cover. St Olaf does a great job of hosting and it’s a beautiful college campus. I got to visit with my favorite journalist John Millea from the Minnesota High School League. John writes John’s Journal. The LQPV-DB boys team finished in 4th place out of 16 teams. It was a pleasure to interview the Class A State Girls champion, Morgan Gehl from Murray County Central high school. She is fun to watch run. Canby-Minneota Braelyn Merritt running in her first state meet placed 74th out of 176 runners. Unfortunately Grace Drietz did not finish the race because of a medical issue. Blake Stoks was sure excited to be at state and did well.

After cross country was over I jumped in my car and headed to Marshall to broadcast the Section 3A volleyball championship match with Minneota vs Adrian. Minneota dominated the Dragons and are going back to state. I enjoy broadcasting with Kelsey Buysse. Kelsey is a very good sports commentator! She’s at another level when it comes to broadcasting. Can’t wait to broadcast state volleyball this week with Kelsey and Molly.
It was a busy, but fun week. Guess what? That’s the way I like it!
