It seems like I always mention how much I enjoy my job, but here I am blogging about it again. I absolutely love what I do! It doesn’t even feel like work; it’s like going to a party every day. This past week was filled with meeting amazing people and learning new things—I found myself smiling and truly enjoying life.
On Tuesday, I was invited to the Montevideo Veterans Home to share stories about my broadcasting career and my blog, Raymo’s Ramblings. Paul Stagg, who spent many years at WCCO Radio, is a resident there and hosts an in-house mock radio program in the theater every other Tuesday. Paul and I were seated up front with microphones in front of an audience of residents, spouses, and staff. Paul is a master host; he asked great questions about KLQP and my sports broadcasting, but to my surprise, he also wanted to dive into my blog! He told me he finds it fascinating and had a good laugh about the post where my wife banned me from starting campfires.

After a fantastic hour of questions and answers, we moved to the reception room for coffee, doughnuts, and fellowship. I had the honor of sitting with about a dozen Veterans. I noticed right away how many were wearing their military caps and apparel—they are so proud of their service, and rightfully so. Many of them said how much they enjoy listening to KLQP. I enjoyed that hour of visiting with them so much; I already want to go back.

The rest of my work week involved broadcasting the Dawson-Boyd and Minneota baseball game in the cold and snow! By the last two innings, it was coming down pretty good, but the game pushed on with the Blackjacks winning 3-2 in the bottom of the 7th. On Friday, I found myself in the new softball press box at LQPV. They built a wonderful new concession stand with restrooms and a spacious press box with a great view of the fields.

On Saturday, I hosted the Coaches Show with Dick Newman and then cheered on the LQPV boys’ volleyball team via Hudl. They made history at Osseo High School playing their first MSHSL-sanctioned match ever. They held their own against the big city schools, placing 4th out of 12 teams. Coaches Molly Hennen and Andrew Schmidt have done an amazing job building that program.

Another part of the job I love is the interviews. I recently spoke with Dustin Johnson, a farmer from Dawson, about his March trip to Vietnam with 30 other farmers to study local crops. It was a fascinating conversation. This week is also Severe Weather Awareness Week, so I’ve been recording segments with experts. One was Aidyn Bruns, a Canby graduate now studying meteorology at the University of Oklahoma. She really knows her stuff and is already on-air at the campus station.

I could go on and on about my job and the fun I have “working.” It has its perks, too—for some reason, people are always giving me food, caps, and tickets! I am so blessed to go to work every day, have a blast, and get paid for it. I always tell Maynard and Kerri I’d do this job for nothing. Maynard’s usual response? “Can I get that in writing!”
