WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU DO ALL DAY?

Earlier this week, someone asked me a question that caught me off guard: “What do you do all day?” The way he asked, it sounded like he thought I didn’t actually work!

I ended up walking him through my routine from sunrise to sunset, and as I went into detail, I realized—this would make a great blog post. While no two days are ever truly the same in this radio business, here is a look at the “many hats” I wear.

The Early Morning Hustle

My day starts at 5:45 AM. After a quick shower and a cup of coffee, I head to my favorite chair for some quiet time with the Lord. I read my Bible and pray, then I listen to Pastor Greg Laurie’s daily podcast; it’s the best way to center myself before the chaos begins.

By the time most people are just waking up, I’m already at my computer compiling high school sports scores. I gather results from coaches’ texts and emails from the night before, and scan the sports sections of the Willmar and Marshall newspapers online. I record my report right at my desk at home, edit the audio, and email it to the station. Maynard then inserts it into the system so it hits the airwaves by 7:15 AM.

At the Station

After a quick breakfast (usually oatmeal or a cheese omelet), I head into the station around 9:00 AM. My first task is recording the Swift and Chippewa County news, along with the “National Day” celebrations—everything from National Dog Day to the more obscure ones, like kiss a red head day!

Troy and Paul at City Hall Bar and Grill in Minneota. They are one of our fine advertisers.

The rest of my morning is a marathon of sales calls, writing scripts, and recording commercials for local small business owners. I also produce several weekly shows, including Wellness Wednesday, the Computer Show with John and Theresa Witte, and Fashionista Fridays with Monica. Also the Appleton Library Show with Cindy  Hendrickx, so its a constant “dance” of communication between myself, Maynard, Kris, Missy, and Kerri.

On the Road

My afternoons often take me out of the office. Whether it’s Chamber meetings in Madison, Canby, and Dawson, or meetings at the Madison Mercantile or at the local schools, I’m always on the move somewhere.

Fashionista Fridays with Monica

If I have a ballgame to broadcast in the evening, I plan my sales calls for that town in the afternoon. For example, if there’s a basketball game in Montevideo, I’ll spend the afternoon visiting clients there before heading to the school to set up. On game nights, I usually get home around 10:00 PM, decompress with my wife and the news, and hit the pillow by 11:30 PM.

The Wrap Up

Even Saturdays are busy! I co-host the Coaches Show with Dick Newman and wrap up paperwork before heading home at noon.

It’s a long day, and it’s a lot of work, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I absolutely love what I do.
