This past Saturday was exactly where I needed to be: in front of the television watching all kinds of sports. In the fall, that’s my usual Saturday spot, but this weekend, I had doctor’s orders to be there. After a week at the hospital in Madison, I was released on Friday afternoon and told to “lay low” for a few days. So, I followed those orders to the letter and watched college football, state high school volleyball, and state football all day long!
About midday, I realized I’m actually pretty good at running the TV remote control—and it definitely got a workout! I felt like I had some super natural power navigating the television with my remote. I was changing many channels often and new what I was doing.

A Day of Thrilling Finishes
Here’s a quick recap of the action:
- I started the day with SMSU football on the NCIS Network. It was great to hear my friend and broadcast partner, Scott Monson, serve as the analyst. Scott had a particularly busy weekend, as he filled in for me the night before, broadcasting the Minneota state football game in Jordan! He did a fantastic job with both broadcasts.
- During commercial breaks, I’d switch over to the State Volleyball Tournament on NSPN TV, catching RTR playing for the Class A state championship against the #1-ranked Mayer Lutheran.
- The remote then took me to State Football on NSPN TV, where I watched Chanhassen, coached by former LQPV graduate Mike Jacobs. I bounced between that game and others throughout the afternoon.
- My absolute favorite part of the day was when I switched to watch the Indiana vs. Penn State game. What a finish! To enhance the experience, I turned down the TV volume and used a college football app on my phone to listen to the Indiana broadcasters. Their excitement when the Hoosiers won at the end was infectious!
- I repeated that trick for the thrilling finish of the North Dakota vs. North Dakota State game, watching the action on screen while listening to the passionate NDSU radio crew.
- Had to catch Dawson-Boyds Zach Durfee playing at Wisconsin with the Washington Huskies. That was on the BTN Network. Fun to watch someone you know playing big time college football on tv
- Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the SDSU vs. South Dakota rivalry game on YouTube TV. They dropped ESPN last week due to a dispute, which is frustrating since the game was on that network. So, I listened to that fantastic rivalry battle on the radio instead. The Jackrabbit radio play by play guy is the best! He’s fun to listen to.
- I closed out the day catching Marshall volleyball and the Annandale vs. Litchfield state football game. I also caught the heartbreaking end of the Alexandria state football game—tough luck for the Cardinals.

The Multi-Screen Experience
One thing I love about my TV is the ability to watch four games on one screen simultaneously. My remote control got a serious workout on Saturday, and I thoroughly enjoyed following my doctor’s orders.
I did get a little exercise in today by running the vacuum, but mostly, I’m just appreciating the simple joy of rest. I truly love Saturday afternoons in the fall because the sports are simply the best! Time to put new batteries in my remote!
