I’ve broadcasted countless games over the years, but I’ve never once had a pizza delivered to me while on the air. Well, there’s a first time for everything.
My broadcast partner, Bart Hill, and I were at Nelson Field in Dawson, to cover the Madison Mallards and Morris Eagles playoff game. The weather was perfect—temperatures in the 70s with low humidity—and we were set up just two rows from the field, broadcasting the Region 3C baseball tournament.

Around the sixth inning, a heavenly aroma filled the air. We watched as Serena Brown walked past us and delivered a glorious-looking pizza to the group sitting in front of us. It turned out to be her parents, and friends Tom and Ann Fernholz. We couldn’t stop talking about it on the broadcast—the pizza just looked and smelled so good.

Between pitches, I tried to get Serena’s attention, hoping she would bring us a slice. After she returned to the concession stand, Bart and I even tried to convince the people in front of us to share. I was genuinely hungry, so during the next commercial break, I texted Serena. “Bart and I would like a sausage pizza delivered ASAP!”
About two innings later, she came through, walking right up to our broadcast table with a hot pizza, plates, and napkins. We were so excited we started talking about it on the radio, took a picture, and then immediately dug in. It might have been rude to be broadcasting with our mouths full, but we couldn’t help it. Bart even got pizza sauce on the microphone!

It took us a couple of innings, but we devoured that sausage pizza, washing it down with Diet Sundrops. I’d never done anything like that before while broadcasting, but it was a blast. A huge thanks to Serena for making and delivering our pizza with a smile!
If you’re wondering, Morris won 6 to 1 over the Madison Mallards
