CRAZINESS IN THE STUDIO

Working at a radio station during a winter storm can be pretty intense with all the postponements and cancellations coming into the studio to be put on the air. What made it all the more difficult was that Maynard was gone on a missions trip for the week. He’s the Hall of Famer that makes it sound so easy on the radio. So, that meant I was the guy to get the word out and also try and keep everything in order. So, I’m like the backup quarterback. I did have lots of help from Missy, Kris and Kerri.

Last Tuesday and Wednesday was a mess with all the snow and wintery mix. It was hard to measure but we figured around 8 inches of wet and heavy snow. I think I counted 68 postponements and cancellations that came into the radio station. Not only is it my job to get the information out in a timely manner over the air, but also to post them on the KLQP Facebook page and keep that updated. The studio becomes like an emergency triage center it seems with all the fast pace and loud talking going on. KLQP is an information center and I take very seriously getting correct information out and getting it out over the air fast.

Missy, Kris and Kerri worked very hard Tuesday and Wednesday. Having a storm on a Wednesday makes it more complicated with all the church cancellations during Lent. With the wet heavy snow falling Kerri was doing her best to keep the two satellite dishes in the back yard clean, brushing them off with a broom. We did lose our satellite signal a few times because of the snow falling so hard. All four of us were stressed and doing our best to do a good job. Wednesday Kerri bought lunch for all of us because we were working so hard and really couldn’t leave or stop. The Pantry Cafe is very convenient when it’s next door. I had a  Bills Burger that day and it was great. I had a Randy’s omelet for breakfast on Monday. Thanks Randy and Jody.

Keeping the sidewalk clean was a challenge, too. The snow was so wet and heavy it was hard to shovel. We took turns shoveling so people could get to the radio station easily. A few people did fall on the sidewalk down the street from us. Spring in Minnesota can be crazy. Winter storm one day and blue sky and 40-50 degrees the next.

Thursday and Friday at the studio was a breeze and thank goodness we were back to normal broadcasting. I’m not cut out to be a early morning DJ. It’s always a fast pace morning. Our listeners are so kind and thoughtful. Sam Roth stopped by and brought me lunch on Thursday. So working in radio has its perks.

Sam Roth made me a awesome lunch on Thursday.

I have a new appreciation for Maynard and how hard he works at the radio station, especially from 6am-10am. He is very good at what he does and he makes it sound very easy. I think I will stick with sales and sports! I am sure glad winter storms are done for the season. Hopefully.
