MY FRIEND LOU

I get to spend time with some of the best people in area press boxes. I’ve spent hours and hours in different press boxes over the years visiting with scoreboard people, public address announcers, and other radio sportsbroadcasters.

I met Lou Kuno from Montevideo thirty some years ago. At the time, Lou was broadcasting Montevideo sports for KDMA. Each time I was in Montevideo to broadcast a game, I always looked forward to visiting with Lou. He and his broadcast partner Ken Swanson were a great team and we became good friends.

Lou has spent most of his time being the public address announcer at the Montevideo baseball field. In his career he has done hundreds if not thousands of games. I have seen Lou work and he is a great PA. He gets the starting lineups and visits with the coaches. He has his laptop hooked up and plays the best music between innings. He announces with enthusiasm. After the game is over he announces the final stats to everyone, who the winning pitcher is, the leading hitters and team stats. No other public address announcer does that. He thanks everyone for coming. Lou does the little things that makes it fun to come to the ballpark. He always has a smile on his face. He’s in his happy place in the press box.

Another thing that makes Lou special is how he treats me and other radio broadcasters in his press box. When I walk up the stairs, Lou is always standing at the top waiting to greet me and shake my hand and to tell me that he is happy to see me. He always asks a couple of times ” Can I get you anything Paul?” Do you have everything you need? We share lineup cards and make sure we can pronounce the kids’ name correctly. Lou is very knowledgeable about baseball. Before the game we have a great time just talking about baseball and life in general.

Lou’s family

This past Saturday the Minnesota Baseball Coaches Association met at Target Field and recognized Lou for his work as a baseball supporter.

This was posted on the Montevideo baseball Facebook page

Congratulations to longtime Montevideo PA announcer and steadfast baseball supporter Lou Kuno. Lou was presented the Angelo Giuliani award from the Minnesota State Baseball Coaches association tonight at Target Field. The Montevideo baseball community thanks Lou for his 30 years in the press box and promoting Montevideo Baseball.

The Angelo Giuliani Award recognizes someone who has promoted high school baseball in the state of Minnesota (scout, media, umpire, etc.).

Lou is a great friend and he deserves the recognition. The Montevideo community is lucky to have you. You do great work, Lou! Congratulations.
