The last week of October and first week of November is my busiest week at work. If you want to call broadcasting section sports work.
As I get older, it is still fun but I start to run out of steam around Thursday. I just as well rent an apartment in Marshall this time of year instead of driving an hour to Marshall each day. Tuesday I had two section volleyball matches, Thursday back to Marshall for the Section 3A North volleyball match between Canby and Minneota. Then on Friday it was section football at The Schwans Event Center. I finished the week out on Saturday night with the Section 3A volleyball championship.

I also still have all my regular duties at the radio station, selling radio spots and producing and hosting a number of radio shows. Some of those radio shows are Wellness Wednesdays with local doctors and specialists, The Rural Solution Computer Show, Fashionista Fridays with Monica, Health Talk Tuesdays and of course the Coaches Show on Saturday morning.

We did cover the state cross country meet in Minneapolis Saturday and a big thanks to Tony Ourada for broadcasting live with interviews and results.

But, Friday afternoon was one of the best high school football games I’ve had the privilege to broadcast. It was the Section 5A football game between BOLD and Minneota. What a football game! Minneota was down 21-7 at half and came back and won 34 to 28. Minneota Superintendent Scott Monson joined me for the first time. That was really fun. In the last three years BOLD’s record is 25 and 5, four of the five losses have come from Minneota.

I get asked this question more than any other when talking with someone about high school sports. How does Minneota do it? How do they have so much success in sports for a small school? The football and volleyball programs are elite year after year. I really don’t know how to answer, but I do say a couple of things. Family genes, the kids’ moms and dads were champions and really good athletes. Also, the kids and the coaches are all in. The commitment that they have for their sport is strong and the desire to be best. The coaching staffs for football and volleyball have been together for a long time and work well together. And you add to that a business community that supports the school. That’s usually how I answer that question.

Saturday night was the Section volleyball championship between Minneota and West Brook Walnut Grove. This was the 8th year in a row that Minneota has played in the section game. Last year they lost in five sets to the eventual state champions RTR. This year Minneota won 3 sets to 1 over WWG and will make another trip to state. So back to selling state volleyball and football Monday at work. Going to be another fun but busy week of state football and volleyball.
