Last fall Mitchell Syltie, a LQPV graduate messaged me to see if KLQP would be interested in having him intern at the radio station starting in January. We of course said yes.
Since I have worked at the radio station we have never had an intern work there. I didn’t really know what to expect. Mitchell is attending Wichita State in Kansas and will be graduating after this internship with a degree in Sports Management. He is exploring all avenues when it comes to his degree. Sports Management covers a wide variety of careers to consider.

I will be honest, I didn’t really know how this was going to work out. I was a bit uneasy about it. I didn’t really know Mitchell, but I know his mom and dad and that he had golfed in the state golf tournament when he was at LQPV. I didn’t know he was attending Wichita State. Mitchell came into the station around Thanksgiving time and sat down with Maynard and me to go over all the details and see how things were going to work. We discussed expectations and what Mitchell wanted to get out of the internship. My office at the radio station has another desk in it so we set Mitchell up there.

Mitchell started January 8th. He seemed pretty excited to get to work. We jumped right in and I took him on a few sales calls around Madison and Canby. He got pretty excited when I told him we would be attending the Canby Chamber meeting at PK Egans. We both love PK’s pizza. I found out quickly that Mitchell has some really good computer skills. He took over updating our sports page on the KLQP website and caught on quickly. We put together our February sports broadcasting schedule that can be challenging at times. He went into the production room and produced all the promo’s for the games we were going to do. Before each game Mitchell researches everything he can find about the teams we are covering. He does his homework. The first basketball game he did with me was the Montevideo boys handing the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks their first loss of the season. The Monte gym was full of fans and it felt like a section championship game.

Mitchell was with me when we broadcasted live from the new Montevideo Veterans Home last Monday. What an experience we had visiting with the first veteran resident Bill Homan. The staff was amazing and welcomed us.

The best thing we have done so far in the internship is start a podcast. Both Mitchell and I really enjoy talking about sports. We sure had fun trying to come up with a name for our podcast. Having a unique name for a podcast is really important and we just couldn’t come up with one until Maynard got involved. We asked Maynard to help us come up with a name. Now, Mitchell and I are not tiny, skinny or petite. We are pretty big guys. Maynard suggested “Two Guys Weigh In Podcast.” We all laughed and thought that was a pretty cool name. We produced our first podcast last Wednesday and it was a huge success. We have received a lot of great comments. I want to thank Corrine at PK Egans for sponsoring our podcast. You can look for it every Wednesday on our website and social media sites.

Mitchell is here till May and then he will graduate. The experience so far has been really fun for me and I’m looking forward to the next few months working with Mitchell.
