I had so much fun this week covering high school sports. I am in my happy place broadcasting sports, visiting with coaches, players, parents and grandparents at events. This was my week.
MONDAY: Section volleyball continued and I was in Dawson covering the Blackjacks and Eagles. I really enjoy walking into the Dawson lobby and gym since they remodeled it. It looks so nice. This year I am broadcasting from the top row of the bleachers which is okay with me. During the Subway pregame show I had Carli Bothun join me and talk about the Turkey Trot coming on Thanksgiving Day in Dawson. Carli had her 3 month old son with her. She is so excited for the Turkey Trot. Blackjacks ended LQPV season. I named Reese Johnson the player of the match. I always get nervous when I mention Reese’s name because I’m afraid I’m going to call her Reese Witherspoon, the actress, like I did a few years ago. Which was embarrassing.

TUESDAY: Tuesday I traveled to Canby to broadcast the Lancers and LQPV Eagles section football game. Dick Newman, my broadcast partner went with me. It was really foggy and wet when the game started. It would be my last time broadcasting from Armitage Field. Next year they are building a new football and track complex. It was the last time I had to climb the bleachers and spend time in the press box. A lot of history on that field, Canby won 32-0.

WEDNESDAY: I had a day off of covering high school sports, but had a dentist appointment. Alexis was cleaning my teeth and said to me out of the blue, “You like Taylor Swift music don’t you?” She knew I was a Swiftie! So we spent most of the time talking about Taylor Swift, which I thought was funny. I also attended “Community Care Giver Support Group” that meets at the Madison Mercantile the first Wednesday of the month. Care givers need a lot of support, its not a easy job. I then spent the rest of the day selling advertising in Montevideo.

THURSDAY: The LQPV/DB cross country team hosted a very large section cross country meet at the Madison Country Club, 22 teams were in Madison. I am always amazed at how many people come out to watch cross country. The sport has really grown over the years. I ran into my friend from Wabasso PJ Bock. PJ is an amazing person. He covers the Wabasso Rabbits. PJ knows everything about everybody. He is a walking Google person, just a wealth of information and a really nice guy. I interviewed the Canby-Minneota girls team and coaches after the awards ceremony live on the radio. The C/M girls are going to state and they are a bunch of great girls. I also spent some time visiting with Gavin Carl and Chloe Gloege from the LQPV/DB cross country team. They are heading to state as well, which is this Saturday at the University of Minnesota. I was also getting texts and posting on my social media sites results from state tennis. Kayla Jahn and Hannah Oie from LQPV/DB fell in both of there matches at state. They will be back next year.

FRIDAY: We welcomed Eye and her mom and dad from Thailand at the radio station Friday afternoon. Eye was an exchange student at LQPV in 2012. She is an engineer and lives in Michigan. Her parents are visiting her for a few weeks and came to Madison for a visit. I have met Eyes mom before but not her father. Dr. Woraphat Phucharoen is founder of Bojjhanga Foundation in Thailand and an author of many books. It was a pleasure for Roxie and I to spent time with them Friday afternoon. We went to the Madison Mercantile and sat on the couches surrounded by books drinking latte’s. It was a great time. They are very nice people. After our visit I had to drive to Minneota to broadcast the Vikings and Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks section volleyball match. Minneota is ranked number one in Class A and defending state champions. The Blackjacks fought and played hard but fell 3-0. I have to give a shout-out to Hailey Gritmacker, the Blackjacks head coach. Win or lose she always finds time to visit with me on the postgame show. It’s not easy to come up and talk right away when you lose. But Hailey is so proud of her team and the way the girls handle themselves that it’s easy for her to talk about them. She does a great job with the program. You can see the program growing. I talked to some of the girls and they seem to be having so much fun.

SATURDAY: I did the Coaches Show in the morning, then drove to Olivia to cover more section football. Dawson-Boyd was playing BOLD. Highway 212 opened from Granite Falls to Olivia on Thursday. It had been detoured all summer. It was snowing lightly the whole game and cold out. I was nice and warm and dry in BOLD’s nice press box. The very young Blackjack team lost, but they are going to be really good the next few years. Saturday is for college football and on the way to Olivia I listened to South Dakota State playing South Dakota and on the way home I listened to the Gophers win.

It was a fun and busy week and this week will be the same. Love it!!
