TWO DAYS IN CANBY

I spent Thursday and Friday in Canby this past week and had the best time! There was so much going on in the community and at the school. It was homecoming week.

Probably the biggest volleyball match in the state of Minnesota was played in Canby on Thursday. The defending state champions and currently ranked number one in the polls the Minneota Vikings were in Canby to take on the state ranked Lancers! I was so excited driving over to Canby Thursday for this match. I know both coaches well and enjoy visiting with them. Jenai Wright of the Lancers has a very young team, she starts 5 sophomores and a senior. They are a very good team. Minneota Vikings coach Hailey Fruin again has some very talented volleyball players. Canby won the first set and the Vikings won the next three to win the match.

Being in the Canby gym Thursday night was exciting! The gym was loud and full, kids were having fun cheering on their teams. Football coach Nick Kockelman played the national anthem on his electric guitar. The public address announcer DeLon Clarksean is the best, his deep bass voice boomed out the starting lineups! He also introduced me to the crowd and the Canby student section started chanting my name! I was a little embarrassed! But I appreciate the shout-out. It was a great night for high school sports.

Friday I drove over to Canby twice. All summer long I broadcast live from Jim’s Market for Food Wagon Friday with Brian McKeen the general manager. I look forward to it every week. This was the last Food Wagon Friday of the year. When I arrived I noticed Brian was inside the food Wagon working. The group that was to work the food truck never showed up, so Brian was doing everything from grilling to putting the meals together and serving the customers! I had a good laugh with Brian when I saw that. That has never happened before. It was fun watching Brian working so hard.

Friday night was the homecoming football game. The Lancers were playing the LQPV Eagles. It was a great hard hitting football game. The first half ended with Canby leading 7 to 6. The halftime activities went off well, introducing the royalty and the new members of the Canby Hall of Fame. I interviewed the Canby cheerleading captains so it was a busy halftime. Then the announcement was made that the game was being suspended because of lightning. Bummer! We waited two hours before the second half kicked off. Both football teams played hard and Canby came out on top 15-12. I got home at midnight.

I enjoy meeting and visiting with people, I always enjoy visiting the Canby concession stand at the school to visit with my friend Catherine Fink. She always has the biggest smile and is so kind. The popcorn is really good.

It was a memorable two days in the wonderful community of Canby.
