FAIR TIME

I spent most of my week in Morris attending and working at the Stevens County Fair. I absolutely love being at county fairs. If you’re a people person county fairs are heaven to you.

Each year I set up the KLQP radio booth at Yellow Medicine in Canby, Chippewa in Montevideo, Stevens in Morris, Swift in Appleton and the last fair Lac qui Parle in Madison. So my summer is spent at county fairs and baseball fields. I like so many things about working the fair booth for KLQP. Number one is visiting with our listeners who stop by to say hi and tell me why they like listening to KLQP. For the most part I know most of the people that I talk to, but sometimes someone I’ve never met before tells me that they listen to Q-92 all the time. They will tell me where they live and why they listen. It makes me feel good about what we do at the radio station

My wife Roxie worked with me at the fair on Friday

This week at the Stevens County Fair in Morris I was interviewing some of our advertisers, Heartland Motors, Hometown Flooring and Blinds out of Hancock and Rebel Camper from Clara City to name a few. It’s good to get to know them in an atmosphere other than at their place of business. I always end my interviews asking what their favorite fair food is. It’s fun to hear everyone’s answers. My favorite at the Morris fair was the chicken drummies sold by the Morris gymnastics club. You got 3 drumsticks for $5 and the seasoning on them was amazing. The sweet corn ice cream was also really good too. Fair food is my weakness.

Jennifer stopped by the booth and thought I should have a Taylor Swift bracelet.

Sometimes visiting with people in the booth makes me laugh. A group of teenagers were talking with me when one boy asked me if I worked at the radio station and I said yes. Then he asked me what it was like playing and listening to music all day? He was thinking that’s all I did and thought it was cool to listen to music all day and get paid! I smiled and kindly said. Well, I do more than play and listen to music.

Another conversation with another person was about how some radio stations aren’t local anymore. He was complaining about his local station. They don’t do local news, or anything local. That’s why he listens to Q-92 because you get local information. I thanked him for listening. I’m surprised at how many people tell me they listen to the old country music we play in the evenings. Of course I get lots of comments about broadcasting high school sports. I enjoy hearing that.

County fairs are so much fun to attend. I enjoyed my time in Morris this week. Up next is Swift County in Appleton. Stop by our booth and say hi! If I’m not in the booth Friday afternoon I’ll be in the Chuck Brown building judging pies!
