PRESS BOX FRIENDSHIPS

You know the saying what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. The same can be said in a press box. What happens in a press box stays in the press box!!

I know most of you have never been in a press box, but that is where I live. Sometimes it seems as if I spend more time in press boxes, than I do in my own home. The people who are usually in the press box with me are other radio station sports broadcasters, score board operators and of course the public address announcer. It is usually the same people year after year. So we get to know each other pretty well. I was reminded this past week of how much I enjoy visiting with the people in the press box and how they have become friends.

Bart Hill and Lou Kuno

I was over in Montevideo this week broadcasting the Jr Legion baseball playoffs, Bart Hill was broadcasting with me. The PA guy is always Lou Kuno. He is one of the best. Lou and I have had a friendship for a very long time. He was the play by play guy for Montevideo sports, working for KDMA for many years. Bart also knows most of the baseball people in the press box, since he was a long time baseball coach. My son Brandon joined Lou, Bart and myself during the game. In between innings and at commercial breaks we were talking and trying to decide which one of my sons was the better baseball player with Bart as their coach. We had some good laughs and everyone in the press box was joking around and they were teasing me about pronouncing the name Reidinger wrong. While all the action happens on the field during the game a lot of fun stuff happens in the press box between innings and during commercial breaks.

Lou treats us right and we have great conversations and some good laughs. The score board guy is either Mark Reidinger or Henry Hendrickson. Before the game starts there is a lot of joking around and ribbing each other. We all help each other with the line up cards and pronunciations of players names. We talk baseball in general. I always tell Lou he has the best music to play at a ballpark on his laptop. He has a great voice and at the end of the game he gives a final wrap up of stats. I don’t know anyone else that does that. Lou is the best!

Our view from the press box!

The Montevideo press box is above the concession stand and we get all the smells of popcorn, hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill. The week before I was also in Montevideo and my granddaughter Adelyn brought me a hamburger, chips and a pop up to the press box. This time the guy running the concession stand came up with a hot dog for everyone after the game. The parents that work the concession stand are great. We are well taken care of. So it is always fun to come to the Montevideo baseball field, from chatting with Doug, who is taking tickets at the gate to Lou in the press box it’s a great experience.
