WHY I LIKE GOLFING

When summer comes around I look forward to golfing. I am not a good golfer but I like to be on a golf course trying my best to hit that little ball in a hole that is some 300 yards away in the fewest strokes.

Zane, Josh, me and Brandon

Last weekend we had our family golf outing. It’s called the Raymo Cup. This was the 21st year of getting the Raymo guys together for a weekend of golf. The Raymo Cup includes me and my brothers, along with our sons and sons-in-law. Most of us golf on a regular basis and really enjoy it. It has become a nice family tradition. For the first time last weekend my grandson Zane joined us, making him the third generation. So maybe the tradition will continue after I am gone. It is really a fun time. We take turns hosting the Raymo Cup so each year we are golfing on different courses. We all stay at the house of the person hosting. We do more than golf on the weekend. We have a bean bag tournament on Friday night and also play cards every year. We grill steaks and also have a few other refreshments during the weekend.

Kris chipped in from here at the Johnson Memorial Golf Tournament in Dawson. She was pretty happy

Kris Kuechenmeister, the office manager at KLQP loves to golf and is on the Tuesday night ladies league. Kris and I enjoy golfing in summer tournaments representing KLQP. We usually golf in most of the health care, agriculture and chamber fundraising events in the area. Over the years we have invited different people to join us on our team. We have had many good times on the golf courses with lots of laughs and building friendships. Meeting new people and hanging out with different people is one of the reasons I like to golf. I’m a people person so it is right up my alley.

One of my favorite high school sporting events to cover is the state golf tournament at Pebble Creek in Becker. I have been pretty fortunate to be able to follow area golf teams and individuals that participate at the state level. It is a great two day tournament. This spring the LQPV girls won the state championship for the third time. If I remember correctly my first visit to state was following the Dawson/Boyd boys golf team when they won a state championship. I have covered many individuals from different schools at state over they years. Lots of fun memories with coaches, golfers, parents, grandparents and other people at state golf. I might be the only radio station covering state golf. I look forward to it every year.

My son Brandon

Why I like golf? I thank my son Josh for introducing me to the game when I was in my forties. I didn’t start golfing till I was 43 years old. Like I said I am not a very good golfer, I think if I golfed more I might improve. It can be a very frustrating game, but after hitting a really bad shot your next shot might land a few feet from the hole and then you think you are Tiger Woods. I keep golfing mainly because I like being around people, having fun and being outside. It’s a great sport. Check out some of my picture gallery below.
